Yocto was founded by Dr. Gabriella Chan. Gabriella is a lawyer, scientist, and entrepreneur. She earned a law degree (JD) from Osgoode Hall Law School, with a focus in business and IP law, and obtained her legal training at a national Bay Street law firm in Toronto. Gabriella has direct experience working in biotechnology start-up companies, having most recently served as the Vice President of Legal Affairs, and previously as the Intellectual Property and Technology Manager, at two Toronto-area nano/biotechnology companies. Furthermore, as the founder of Yocto Law®, Gabriella is intimately familiar with every aspect of running a business.
Gabriella also holds a doctorate (PhD) from the University of Toronto. Her doctoral work focused on molecular diagnostics for infectious diseases, particularly malaria and SARS-CoV, while her post-doctoral research focused on nanotechnology-based handheld diagnostic devices. Gabriella’s graduate work was supported by a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Doctoral Research Award and the University of Toronto’s prestigious Connaught Scholarship. She published extensively and presented her work at both national and international scientific conferences.
In addition, Gabriella holds a Regulatory Affairs Certificate in Medical Devices from the Regulatory Affairs Professionals Society (RAPS).
Gabriella’s multidisciplinary background and strategic focus, gleaned from practical industry insight, her experience in working closely with scientific teams and world-renowned researchers to commercialize academic research conducted in some of Canada’s world-class research institutes, and her experience negotiating licensing agreements with university technology transfer offices provides a uniquely sophisticated level of technical knowledge and legal expertise that translate into essential counsel and a competitive business advantage for Yocto’s clients.
